Kids coaching kids creates excitement and connection!

On Saturday, June 14, Vallarta Yacht Club hosted a Junior Sailing Demo Day, welcoming local kids and their parents to learn more about what our youth sailing program is all about.

What made the day extra special was that our junior sailors were the ones in charge—acting as coaches and guides for the day. They demonstrated how to rig and launch the boats, answered questions, and then took the prospective kids out for a short sail around the marina. For many, it was their first time on a sailboat, and the smiles said it all.

They spoke about the confidence and independence their kids have gained, and how sailing has helped them build self-awareness, leadership, and teamwork. The pride was clear—and the sense of community even clearer.

The event came together thanks to the support and enthusiasm of Leo Uribe, the new Director of Junior Sailing for VYC, Coaches Tata and Keyla, Esther, Bart, Sheryl, and Ann who helped with coordination and promotion. A shout out to our junior sailor, Gael Uribe, who  helped spread the word at local schools.

Thanks to everyone’s efforts, the program is now nearly full—with a waiting list already forming. We’ve recently brought on two new coaches, and Keyla is training them to be ready for a busy, exciting and  growing program.

A big thank you also goes to Tim Palmatier, who keeps our fleet in great condition and ready to sail.

It was a great morning at the club, and a wonderful way to welcome new families into the VYC sailing community.
