Thank You, VYC Members and Friends!
The results are in - 1,555 people have had a nutritious meal on their table, earned from 311 work hours on town beautification projects thanks to the united effort in the first annual PEACE Work for Food Drive.
The Vallarta Yacht Club, Marina La Cruz, Bucerias Bilingual Community Center, and hotels Four Seasons and St. Regis collected a total of 1,244 donated food items. Over 30% of the food was donated by Members and Friends of the VYC - thank you! The Work for Food Drive was held September 1-30.
The program grew out of flood-relief efforts after the destructive rains of September 2010, and has continued due to steady job losses and community need. Every day since that time, community members from Punta de Mita, Higuera Blanca and Bucerias identify their towns’ needs and create jobs for 80 locals in need of work, beautifying public spaces in return for food. Two hours of work earns a participant 70 pesos’ worth of food, enough for 10 people. Over 500 people will be fed just from VYC donated food! To read more about this program, click below. The Vallarta Yacht Club launched the idea of an annual Work for Food drive to help the local
community during this most difficult month of September. Other organizations were quick to help, and all have committed time, energy and - most important - gathered food donations throughout the month. “We know we are giving to a well-managed program, to help people help themselves,” said one VYC donor. An important aspect of the program is PEACE works hand in hand with local communities to verify the need and the projects.
PEACE works hand in hand with communities in Mexico to provide holistic education combined with community action programs that enable people to improve their quality of life as well as their financial stability.
