Four expert Juniors sailors represented Mexico in the ISAF Youth Worlds last month, held July 7-16 . Our own Manuel Dussault, along with Natalia Montemayor, Daniel Quintanilla, and Nicole Level, all very familiar names around VYC, went to Zadar, Croatia to compete with 370 junior sailors from 44 countries around the world.
As the world's leading championship for youth sailing, the ISAF Youth Sailing World Championship has attracted thousands of young sailors since its introduction in 1971. Over that time nations from Africa, Asia, Europe, Oceania, North, South and Central America have all left their mark on the championships.
Our Mexican juniors are sailing with an elite group. Past notable winners of the Youth Worlds include American's Cup skippers, Chris Dickson (NZL), Russell Coutts (NZL), Dean Barker (NZL); Olympic medallists, Ben Ainslie (GBR), Robert Scheidt (BRA), Alessandra Sensini (ITA), Iain Percy (GBR) and Elise Rechichi (AUS); Volvo Ocean Race sailors like Stuart Bannatyne (NZL) and Richard Clarke (CAN). The number of Olympic medalists who participated in this world class event is too long to list, but you can see them here: http://www.isafyouthworlds.com/about-yw/famous-faces.php
This year’s participants had a special treat. You could hear a pin drop, when five-time Olympic medallist and Volvo Ocean Race winner, Torben GRAEL (BRA) started speaking to the group. He was asked to give a speech on his sailing career (click here to read the entire article…)
