VYC Hosts 4th Annual National WesMex Regatta

On Friday evening, January 30th, over 50 young sailors, representing nine Yacht Clubs from as far away as Mexico City and Guadalajara arrived at VYC to compete and qualify for positions on the Mexico Team selected to enter either the 2009 North American or European Optimist Class Championships. These two major continental Regattas will be held this July in the Dominican Republic and Slovenia respectively.

Adjacent to the Optimist course serving 36 Optimist boats, was another longer course for the eleven faster Laser and 420 class boats crewed by Junior Sailors ages 16 and up who were able to compete against each other and a few adult sailors.

The WesMex Regatta is held annually in Banderas Bay and has been sponsored by Toyota-Puerto Vallarta for the past two years. The Regatta took place over the three day weekend with four races on Saturday & Sunday and three races on Monday.  Over 80 box lunches were provided each day by our Club Staff for the junior sailors and the forty volunteer Club Members, coaches, Race Committee and Judges in various support boats on the water. VYC also offered optional breakfast each morning as well as dinner on Saturday and Monday evenings.

Our own VYC Junior Sailors performed color guard flag raising services at the Opening Ceremony Saturday morning.  Sunday evening, the Asosiacion de Mexico Vela Clas Optimist (AMVCO) presented the 2008 Mexico Optimist Rankings at the Paradise Village Beach Party.  Our own twin sisters, Christina and Andrea Vivas ranked 1st and 4th  Overall and 1st  and 2nd  among the ninas.  After two days of racing, the 420 and Laser Class awards were presented, and our own teams of Federico Ortiz/Juan Carlos Mestre and Manuel Dussault & Joaquin took 1st and 2nd place in the 420 Class and Paul Moreno placed 4th in the Laser Class contest.

Closing ceremonies were conducted after hamburgers and hot dogs were served at VYC.  Trophies were presented by AMVCO, Sr. Hector Guzman and Toyota WesMex Sponsor and VYC Flag Member, Sr. Carlos Padilla. Andrea and Cristina Ortiz placed 3rd and 4th Overall and 1st and 2nd respectively in the Girls’ division.  Our VYC “Principantes” of Cristobal Sainz, Emilia Boga, Melissa Medina and Andrew McManus also dominated in their division.
