New Wireless Internet System Covers Nuevo Harbor!

* Update 18 November 2009 you can now buy a service coupon for cash at the Yacht Club*

We have worked very hard over the summer with Digiservices International  to design and build a new state-of-the-art wireless Internet service covering the Nuevo Vallarta Harbor. We are nearly completed with construction and commissioning.

Access Point LocationsIf you are a club member - log into this (our club) Website and another article will be visible to you that explains how to subscribe to the Internet Service for only $29.99 USD per month.  To access that article, Click Here.

Members may also buy a coupon for 1 months service for $500 Pesos at the club.

Note -  There is a $10.00 US discount on the monthly fee for subscription service charged via PayPal.  Remember you can cancel your subsciption on PayPal at any time.

If you are not a club member, you should think about joining! The difference in cost will cover about half your monthly dues!

We also have new service in the clubhouse. It’s free for club members and free for guests with a beverage or food purchase, $40 Pesos otherwise.

If you have not signed up for regular service, see the club staff for a 1 hour service coupon.  If you are going to be working longer than an hour, and you are a member, you can also get a 12 hour service coupon at no charge.

All of the new access points, except one, are up and operational with great coverage of the entire Nuevo Vallarta harbor and nearby area. We have also increased the speed and reliability of the service. We still have a few quirks, but we are well on the way to ironing those out. All subscribers are managed to provide a target of 768kb downlink and 256kb uplink speed. With throttling so that no one user can hog the entire network – unlike other systems.

The new access points are located in the following locations (see picture above):

  • Yacht Club Roof,
  • Marina Pole in front of the Yacht Club,
  • Marina Pole on D22, Marina Residences South East Roof,
  • Marina Residences North Roof,
  • Near the port Captain’s office, and
  • On top of the tall condo next to Estudio Café (should be operational shortly)

This should guarantee complete coverage of the Marina Area.

If you want to try the service – free 1 hour trial coupons are available at the Yacht Club.

From the Marina - we recommend that you connect using a high power external adapter.  You may appear to get a strong signal with just your laptop's built-in adapter, but its transmitter is not very strong.  Our Access Points need to be able to hear your computer too.  It doesn't work if you hear us and we don't hear you.

Unfortunately, some other Access Points and users in the harbor are running illegally high power and their signal  splatters all over everyone else.  Rest assured that we are running the maximum legal power from our access points and it helps if you run increased power too.

Prices are very reasonable and you can sign up online without coming into the club. Non-club member have the option of buying:

  • A monthly subscription to the service for $49.99 USD (you will be automatically renewed until you cancel),
  • 1 month service for $59.99 USD over the web or $750 Pesos at the club,
  • 1 week service for $24.99 USD over the web or $313 Pesos at the club, or
  • 1 day service for $7.99 USD over the web or 100 Pesos at the club

To sign up over the web you just need a Credit Card.  If you would like to take advantage of the subscription discount, you will need a PayPal account (they are easy to set up and free),  You subscription will be charged in US Dollars to your credit card or bank account at your option until you cancel via PayPal. The legal entity set up to build and maintain this service can not accept cash. If you are have a US account, you will not have to pay the 3% fee the credit card companies charge for Peso transactions and you will not have to pay a 5% bank service charge.

Non club members may enroll in the service by first connecting to one of our new access points. All of the access points are named “YACHTCLUB”. If you see more than one, just pick the strongest.

You will then get a “Splash Screen” requesting a user name and password. If you have not yet enrolled. Type the offer code 54321 in the user name field. No password is needed. Then click Login.

You will then see a link to the Registration Page. It says “Click Here to Sign Up!” Click this link and it will take you to a page that lets you enroll for the service.

For any of these services, you must pay via Credit Card. We do not accept cash (but we are exploring this option). We recommend that you set up a PayPal account and either charge it to your credit card or direct via bank transfer.

Once you have signed up, you are ready to go!

The club would especially like to thank Digiservices International; Nick Rau, VYC Vice Commodore; and VYC member Andy Burrow for their help in establishing this new service.

UPDATE:  It is important for Digiservices International to know if you are having problems with the service.  We have established a WiFi Helpdesk to provide a means of recording user issues and problems.  Click here to enter a help desk ticket.  You can get full instructions for setting up your computer for WiFi here.
